The Role

The Manager, Communication is an integral part of the Root Cause communication team.  Reporting to the Director, Communication and overseeing the Communication intern (A Northeastern University Co-Op) position,  the Manager serves as a project manager and primary content producer and publisher. The Manager collaborates with senior staff and external contacts to conceptualize, research, draft, edit, post, share, and measure content about Root Cause projects, insights, and team.  The Manager serves as the point person for key communication systems and processes, including Salesforce, email marketing, and social media. The Manager also serves as a thought partner to the Director, Communication and other senior staff to support the achievement of functional and organizational goals. The Manager must be a proactive, ambitious self-starter who can function independently with a high level of productivity while also serving as a supportive teammate and trusted and reliable partner to the Director.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Co-develop and lead the management of the communication team work plan and content calendar.
  • Manage and mentor the Co-Op to ensure a positive and productive learning experience.
  • Manage content development and distribution processes. Create, edit, and update content — such as scope and grant templates, website content (i.e., project stories, blog posts, project map and list), and social media content,  as well as content published on external sites (i.e., Guidestar, etc).
  • Drive and manage Root Cause’s social media platforms and ensure quality content and meaningful engagement on Twitter and LinkedIn.  Together with the co-op, maintain a daily presence on Twitter and weekly presence on LinkedIn. Lead metrics reporting and analysis.
  • Drive email marketing activities in Salesforce.  Manage subscriber lists, organize campaigns, develop campaign plans, produce email marketing templates, create messages, and schedule and send messages.  Lead metrics reporting and analysis.
  • Serve as Salesforce Administrator.  Develop norms, train and manage users, create and share reports, and support back-end configuration. Create and drive process for ensuring database quality (i.e., mailing list is comprised of active and accurate contact records.) Lead metrics reporting and analysis.
  • Draft, edit, and deploy marketing strategies and content and monitor inbound traffic to Root Cause’s digital communication channels. 
  • Create and drive a process for general inquiries via the website and social media, responding to applicable inquiries or routing them to the appropriate person (e.g., business development, jobs, vendors, etc.).
  • Create dashboards and own ongoing tracking of key performance metrics (website via analytics, social media via spreadsheet, database and email via salesforce) and provide regular updates and recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintain a conference calendar, and support senior staff in preparing proposals and materials for conferences.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Contribute to communication plan development and support execution according to the following key responsibilities.
  • Support design and content development for Root Cause website.  Manage site, including adding new content, updating existing content, etc.  Lead metrics reporting and analysis.
  • Research and stay abreast of the latest trends, tools, and best practices related to communication and marketing. 
  • Support keyword strategy by applying keywords in content creation and editing.  Research, design, and test a Google Adwords strategy and measure performance.
  • Manage external vendors, such as those for web development and hosting, graphic design, Salesforce, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Communication Director to design and deliver communication-related training and professional development for staff to support achievement of organizational goals.
  • Support special projects to promote and share our work or test new services (e.g., workshops, events, strategic initiatives).
  • Co-design and develop a communication microsite (Google Site) and process for sharing Root Cause content and information.
  • Support the communications team in terms of scheduling team check-ins, planning for check-ins with the CEO, and preparing for team transition moments, such as intern departures 

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and manage multiple ongoing projects.
  • Ability to develop coherent and compelling messages for a variety of external audiences.
  • Experience managing and growing Salesforce database required; prior experience as a Salesforce administrator preferred.
  • Solid writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Extraordinary attention to detail.
  • Strong relationship management skills.
  • Ability to develop coherent and compelling messages for a variety of external audiences.
  • Strong research and analytical skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including experience managing up, working with people in senior level positions internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the nonprofit sector and/or interest in the nonprofit sector.
  • Fluency in Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Proficient in campaign software (Salesforce), collaboration tools (Google Drive), website management (WordPress), website analytics (Google Analytics).
  • Basic capacity for design and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite.
