Manager (Advisory Services)
The Manager is a critical member of Root Cause’s project team — driving work, anticipating roadblocks, adjusting timelines, suggesting solutions — and in general, making sure all work, communications, and team members are on track. With the help and support of a Project Lead or Director, the Manager works on multiple projects at a time. Managers also play an organizational leadership role, through supervising another team member or leading an internal Root Cause project.
Managers typically join Root Cause with 4-10 years of professional work experience, which may come from program management, direct service, research, coordination, capacity building, or data collection roles within nonprofit, public, private, or philanthropic organizations. Root Cause Managers have excellent project management and coordination skills. They are committed to relationship building and the use of partnerships to strengthen people, organizations, and communities. They are interested in developing strategic guidance, facilitation, coaching, and capacity-building skills. And, they are passionate about continuous learning, professional development, and asset-based supervision for themselves and others.
- Project management: Owns and leads all project management functions; manages meetings and adjusts project work plan to ensure the project meets all milestones and accomplishes agreed-upon objectives.
- Research & analysis: Conducts primary and secondary research to collect qualitative and quantitative data, perform analysis, and develop insights.
- Production of high-quality deliverables: Develops and finalizes high-quality deliverables (in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
- Process expertise: The Manager has a growing skill set in “process expertise,” such as designing, facilitating, and leading working group meetings or other external events and providing coaching and capacity building to clients.
- Supervision: May support the work and professional development of an Associate on the team.
- Organizational leadership: May begin to lead internal Root Cause projects and operational functions (e.g., Harvest time-tracking reporting). May begin to have supervisory responsibility for an Associate.
- Business development: Develops stronger relationships with clients. Participates in business development opportunities, including proposals and pitch meetings.
- Marketing & communications, including knowledge development: Begins to develop expertise in one or more of Root Cause’s key social issues or service lines. Regularly contributes knowledge content to Root Cause’s marketing and communications efforts (e.g., field notes, case studies, webinars/podcasts, etc.)
Managers typically have:
- 4-10 years of professional work experience, which may come from a mix of program management, direct service, research, coordination, capacity building, or data collection roles within nonprofit, public, private, or philanthropic organizations
- Excellent project management and coordination skills
- Ability to oversee and support self and others in designing and leading tasks toward successful completion (e.g., coordinating a network to plan a convening, interviewing families to develop a synthesis of community needs, conducting research to understand root causes and identify what progress for a particular social issue could look like)
- Ability to identify problems and work towards solutions, especially in unfamiliar or ambiguous circumstances
- Commitment to relationship building and the use of partnerships to strengthen people, organizations, and communities
- Interest and/or experience in developing strategic guidance, facilitation, coaching, and capacity-building skills
- Commitment to organization building, by contributing to Root Cause’s internal operations, knowledge development, strategic direction, and more
- Ability to effectively manage work across multiple projects and share materials/best practices across projects
- Ability to deliver/receive constructive feedback and work effectively with different project and client teams
- Commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and asset-based supervision
- Commitment to addressing the root causes that create barriers to access and equity, seeking systemic solutions, implementing effective change, and advancing racial and social justice (both within Root Cause and in external client work)
- Strong skills in using tools and technology to complete work (e.g., Google docs, Microsoft Office, etc.)
- Managers may have a range of educational experiences, (e.g., a high school diploma, college degree, MA, MBA, MPP, MPH degrees or not)
